PAGAD member Zacharia Albertyn, who has served seven years in jail for the double murder of relatives of a witness against the organisation, was arrested on Monday for a triple murder and for attempted murder.
Pagad national co-ordinator Abdus Salaam Ebrahim, who too had spent time in jail for Pagad activities, was arrested last week for the triple murder. Three Tanzanian men were shot dead and a woman was wounded in Veld Road, Athlone, on August 13.
“Zachariah is being held in the Bellville police cells,” Pagad spokesman Cassiem Parker said yesterday. “We are waiting to get an update from our attorney, but what we know is that Zachariah will be facing the same charges as Abdus Salaam.”
Police spokesman FC Van Wyk would confirm only that a 49-year-old man had been arrested at his home in Surrey Estate near Manenberg on Monday evening,
“He was arrested in connection with the Athlone case – triple murder and an attempted murder on 2013-08-13.
He is being detained for questioning and the investigation continues. Due to the sensitivity of this case this office will not elaborate any further.”
Ebrahim appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of murder and attempted murder. He is due in court on August 26 for a bail application.
