THE fifth annual two-week Red Bull King of the Air competition began last weekend, promising to be the most interesting contest in the illustrious history of this extreme big-air kite-boarding extravaganza.

In this competition, riders face-off only once conditions are perfect - a consistent south-easterly wind in excess of 30-knots and enough swell running from which to boost their mind-blowing aerial manoeuvres.

Currently, the forecast looks favourable for later in the first week.

Sportive Director for Red Bull King of the Air, Sergio Cantagalli, has been keeping a watchful eye over the weather charts.

The sad part though is past champions and 2016 finalists, Jesse Richman from USA and Kevin Langeree of the Netherlands, are unfortunately absent from the starting 18 because of injuries.

Richman injured himself while surfing at home in Hawaii, while Langeree has inured a knee and ankle while in training for this event.
