A 17-YEAR-OLD was murdered in Hanover Park at the weekend.

In Ravensmead, two shooting incidents resulted in one person being wounded, while in Uitsig a 21-year-old was arrested for being in possession of an illegal firearm.

The 17-year-old, who was shot during an alleged robbery, died of his injuries.

Hanover Community Police Forum chairperson Ebrahim Abrahams said police confirmed that the incident did not appear to be gang-related.

“Gang members robbed and killed the young person, but it is not considered a gang-related incident. He was more than likely in the wrong place at the wrong time according to the police,” said Abrahams.

Police believe the tragic incident could have been due to mistaken identity, said Abrahams, and are investigating a local gang who may be involved in the robbery.

The youth’s family declined to comment yesterday as they were preparing for his funeral according to their religious beliefs.

Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said the police attended to the Hanover Park Avenue complaint at about 1.30pm on Sunday.

No one was arrested and a case of murder is being investigated.

Meanwhile, early on Sunday morning in Ravensmead, a shooting incident occurred at a fast-food outlet.

“A victim was wounded and robbed of his belongings. Police followed up information and found suspects with the victim’s cell-phone and the firearm used in the crime at a house in the area,” said Traut.

“Three suspects aged between 20 and 28 years old were arrested and charged with possession of stolen goods, attempted murder and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.”

The three suspects are due to appear in a Bishop Lavis court today on these charges.

On Saturday during a crime prevention patrol in Uitsig, police spotted a “suspicious” person in Begonia Street, Uitsig, where they arrested a 21-year-old male for being in possession of an illegal firearm – a 9mm Petro Beretta pistol and one magazine with nine rounds.

The suspect was arrested and detained, and appeared in a Bishop Lavis court yesterday.
