EXACTLY 20 years to the day the Cape Times led with “Fugitive banker to return”.
The story written by veteran journalist Linda Ensor reported on former Absa executive Bob Aldworth who decided to return to South Africa from London to clear his name and settle his prolonged dispute with the banking group.
The Cape Times reported “he has threatened to make public claims to know of ‘sensitive matters’ within Allied and Absa”.
Aldworth left the country in 1993 after he admitted in an affidavit misappropriating more than R400 000. A warrant of arrest was issued shortly after.
Other news that made the headlines was the ANC’s plans to build one million houses over five years.
Nelson Mandela told an election rally in Cape Town “this plan includes building houses for the coloured community in the Western Cape”.
The newspaper also reported on cost of running Koeberg nuclear power station were prohibitive and could lead to its premature shutdown, said the ANC’s science and technology coordinator Roger Jardine at the time.
