PRETORIA: Metrorail incurred damage estimated at R5 million when one of its trains derailed at the De Wildt Station in Ga-Rankuwa yesterday.
The empty T9911 coach train overshot the end of the platform resulting in four coaches leaving the tracks and its motor-coach overturning.
Metrorail technicians were on scene within minutes of the derailment and were separating the remaining coaches.
The driver's coach was thrown to its side with shattered glass all around him.
Personnel on the scene said the driver did not sustain any injuries.
“The technicians arrived to assess the extent of the damage on the infrastructure and clear the derailed train.
"Trains running between De Wildt and Pretoria stations were delayed by 45 minutes,” the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa said.
“A board of enquiry will be instituted to determine the root cause of the derailment, as safety within our operations is a priority.”
