Trial delayed as Sparrow pleads poverty

DISGRACED former real estate agent Penny Sparrow appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court in Umzinto yesterday on a charge of crimen injuria.

Her appearance stems from a criminal complaint laid against her by the ANC after she took to Facebook saying black beachgoers were monkeys.

Last month the Equality Court fined her R150 000 after the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation laid a complaint over the same Facebook post.

She was not present at the Equality Court.

The matter has also been referred to the National Prosecuting Authority by the Equality Court to pursue a criminal case.

Sparrow has pleaded poverty. Attempts to pay off her fine through online crowd funding failed and the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation said it would not accept the money if it was raised through online donations.

Yesterday Magistrate Vincent Hlatshwayo presided over the case and Mandla Ntobela from the Umlazi Justice Centre represented Sparrow. The case was postponed to August 15.

In the most recent case of racist outrage, KZN estate agent Vicki Momberg also landed herself in trouble after she was recorded on video cursing at black police officers who had tried to assist her following a smash-and-grab robbery in Johannesburg.

She has since said she was remorseful.
