TWO THINGS had those on Twitter aflutter. The first was the fact that President Jacob Zuma had paid back the money and the other was the bank he used to settle his debt.

Before yesterday, many had never heard of the Venda Building Society (VBS) Mutual Bank and had a lot to say about it. EFF leader Julius Malema sent out one simple tweet on the matter: “VBS Mutual Bank?” he wrote.

Also commenting on the matter was @comradesipho, who tweeted: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the PR and media liaison people at VBS Mutual Bank on what has suddenly become a very exciting day.”

Others queried why such a big fuss was being made of the bank Zuma had used.

Among them was ‏@niphomadondo, who asked: “So we are angry President Zuma #paidbackthemoney with a loan from a black-owned bank with state support? Is that not exactly what we want?”

@akanigates said: “The fact that Zuma took a loan from VBS says a lot about his support for black business... Pravin doesn't have shares at VBS,” while @okamhaise also felt that the public couldn’t be satisfied.

“Some people really don't know what they want. They wanted Zuma 2 payback the money. He just did that, now they want 2 see pay statement,” she tweeted.

Many online joked that Zuma had left the EFF in the lurch with the upcoming parliamentary sitting. @Sisi_Sasha said: “The EFF have to restrategise for the president's Parliament address tomorrow. Askies neh.”
