PIPE bombs at two business premises in Athlone were detonated late last night damaging property.

Police spokesman Frederick van Wyk confirmed two explosions in Cape Town but said no one was injured.

"We can confirm that two incidents of explosions occurred last night just after 11pm -- one in Belgravia Road,

Athlone... and the other one at the corner of Jan Smuts and Kromboom roads," Van Wyk said.

According to eyewitnesses Hanif Loonat, the front windows and the entrance

walkway at Woolworths Store in Kromboom Centre were damaged.

Loonat is the former chairman of the Western Cape community safety board.

“Whatever the reason for this crimes are, we cannot allow it to continue.

If its in support of the palenstine movement, if its against and crime, we should not allow this,” he said.

Loonat said there were minor damages to other stores.

A second pipe bomb was also detonated at motor dealership Auto Bavaria

and the other was a small business centre.

“There were also very small damages to the business property,” Loonat said.

"Cases of malicious damage to property were opened for investigation, but there are no arrests as yet," he said.

Van Wyk said there were no reports of injuries or fatalities.

No further details were provided.
