Concert-goers gathered outside the stadium from early yesterday, many eager school children to see Canadian pop star and teen sensation Justin Bieber. Bieber belts out infront of a packed audience of 45 000 revellers at the Cape Town Stadium.

The AfrikaBurn festival brought about 6 500 people to the heart of the Northern Cape's Tankwa Karoo, about 300km north of Cape Town, to pitch their tents.

To mark the centenary of the 1913 Natives Land Act, a photographic exhibition opened yesterday at the Iziko SA National Gallery. Titled Umhlaba, it showcases pictures from 18 archives and the work of over 30 photographers who have engaged with the land issue for over a century. The exhibition covers dispossession and forced removals and also includes a historical journey through the land, according to curators David Goldblatt, Bongi Dhlomo, Pam Warne and Paul Weinberg. Umhlaba runs until July 28.

Twenty pilot whales beached at Noordhoek early yesterday, drawing hundreds of people to try to catch a glimpse of the distressed mammals and setting off a day-long rescue operation that moved from the sea at Noordhoek on to the road at Simon's Town and to the sea there. However, some whales had to be put down while others died on the beach.

Spectators lined the Mouille Point promenade yesterday to watch the R1 million martime disaster exercise "Operation Beachy" where the authorities stimulated an emergency evacuation of passengers from a liner run aground in Table Bay.
