Durban - A feud between two rival traditional dance groups resulted in a Dannhauser pupil being killed this week.
The assault was filmed on a cellphone by a fellow pupil and went viral on Wednesday.
The video showed the pupil being repeatedly hit with a knobkierie and stabbed with a bush knife.
The family of Bongani Nkabinde witnessed his last moments on video in shock.
They said they were horrified by the footage.
“All we could see was blood and all we could hear were his screams,” Nkabinde’s cousin, Joseph, said.
According to a teacher at the school who requested anonymity, a feud between rival dance groups (Nkabinde is the leader of one of the groups) resulted in his (Nkabinde’s) death.
The teen was killed after a fight broke out at the Sizimele High school during Monday morning’s prayer assembly.
The video, which has since been removed from YouTube, shows the Grade 9 pupil being savagely beaten by a gang of young men armed with knobkieries and shows them stabbing Nkabinde multiple times with a bush knife.
The knobkierie belonged to Nkabinde. His family said he had carried the knobkierie to school to protect himself after being threatened by the rival dance group on Friday.
Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said three teenagers had appeared in the Dannhauser Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder.
They were remanded until November 6
