Ladysmith CBD slaying: man surrenders

Durban - THE police reservist who allegedly murdered his girlfriend and her cousin, a policeman, in Ladysmith’s main street on Tuesday has handed himself over to police.

The 38-year-old man surrendered himself at Colenso police station on Wednesday night.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker, said the man would appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The suspect was on the run after allegedly shooting Detective Constable S’phamandla Mgaga, 28, and his cousin, Nonkuleleko Mgaga, 28, while they sat in a vehicle parked in Murchison Street.

It is alleged that, following an altercation, the reservist shot Nonkuleleko in the head through the vehicle’s window, while S’phamandla was shot in the chest and cheek.

Late afternoon shoppers scattered in the town’s busy street as the shots rang out.

Nonkuleleko and the reservist had been in a relationship for several years and had a 3-year-old son.
