Against the backdrop of a touching story of a grandfather and grandson’s love for each other and their shared passion for whales, Ingrid Mennen and Irene Berg (illustrator) have created a journey through life’s cycle.

Using Ben and his beloved grandpa, a story unfolds about love, loss and moving on after you’ve lost someone you love. Running parallel to this is the story of migratory patterns of whales.

While the book is more for older children, I found my three year old was drawn in by the whale aspect. He also seemed concerned about the grandad’s death.

This type of curiosity paves the way for discussions about the cycle of life for animals and people. – Latoya Newman
