When multi-award winning Durban designer Karen Monk-Klijnstra offered to make a glittering ball gown for Jes Foord for her annual ball on Thursday night, it was not her only sparkling idea.
She wanted Foord – a rape survivor who has a foundation that helps people through the harrowing aftermath of their attacks – to get the maximum benefit from the beautiful rainbow beaded and tulle dress she planned to make.
Monk-Klijnstra asked Foord if she would part with the gown after wearing it at the New Beginnings Ball at the Docklands Hotel – where survivors’ achievements and the progress of her foundation will be celebrated – and Foord promptly agreed.
“I asked her if she would model the dress for the Daily News shoot to show off the dress and then auction it at the ball, so that we could raise money for her foundation. The idea is also to auction it online and on her Facebook page,” Monk-Klijnstra said.
The dress will also be part of Monk-Klijnstra’s collection at SA Fashion Week’s Popupshop at Sandton City at the weekend where visitors can also bid for it.
And it will also go on show at the St Mary’s School spring event in Kloof on September 8.
As for Foord, she is raving about the dress, describing it as “awesome”.
“I can only wear it once, so it makes sense for someone else to get some joy out of it,” she said.
To bid for the dress, leave a message on Foord’s Facebook page or e-mail: admin@jff.org.za
