Fashion has always been an integral aspect of the Vodacom Durban July, which takes place at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday, July 2.

The Vodacom Durban July (VDJ) Young Designer Award, presented by Durban Fashion Fair on the day, is arguably one of the country’s most prestigious prizes for up-and-coming designers.

On Monday night, the top 25 were whittled down to 10 fresh new talents. We selected a few of these entries to feature and chatted to the pros that feature in the congruent Invited Designer Showcase about what to wear to Africa’s premier fashion… and horse-racing event.

This year’s fashion theme is Leader of the Pack, a reference to the four suits in a pack of cards.

Designer, Kathrin Kidger, who has begun to post weekly tips on her blog www.kathrinkidgerblog.wordpress.com says, “Start by investigating the history of card playing. There is a rich background to this ancient game that has both a Persian and Ancient Chinese historic influence.

“Another way to look at it is to dress how you would if you were the leader of the pack. Interpret it the way in which it resonates with your ‘fashionability’.”

Kidger adds: “The main piece of advice is to consider your look in its entirety. It should, after all, be an ensemble.”

Designer Hanrie Lues says: “My inspiration for this year’s VDJ can be traced back through the history of playing cards. I was very inspired by the nomadic element of playing cards in the early days of their existence. How they would travel across the world, from their country of origin, in the pockets of travellers as they discovered new worlds!

“Block heel shoes are a must for ladies who would like to stay comfortable while being on trend and super chic.

“White and neutrals are my favourite choices for colours this year, accessorised with black.

“Hemlines are leaning towards above the ankle, also known as ‘tea length’.

“Sleeves are in and sweetheart necklines are out.

“Balance the look with a low back.

“A major wardrobe tip: fascinators are over and hats are back in.

“Note that there is a difference between a cocktail hat and a fascinator. So if it’s something small you’re after, investigate these possibilities.”

Designer Francois Vedemme says his interpretation is a broad one and doesn’t relate to cards at all.

“I saw the theme and the pack of cards as reference to different aspects of a person’s life. In saying that, I believe everyone should strive to be a leader of sorts and so not conform to literal interpretation.”

Vedemme has one major don’t. “Say no to the nude dress. The same goes for sheer skirts and graded beading. Enough already.

“It can’t be innovative if it’s been done to death.

“No naked bits, we’ve seen enough boobs strategically covered with something of some sort...and other bits hanging out… be original, classy and sophisticated.”
