Taste Festivals are held in 16 cities around the world – now Durban will be the 17th to hold the event that will bring together some of the city’s top restaurants, chefs, exhibitors and foodies next month.
Taste of Durban, held in association with Pick n Pay and Orbit chewing gum, will take place at Suncoast from July 27 to 29, becoming part of the global fest that began in London in 2004 and has spread to cities like Milan, Amsterdam, Sydney, Dubai, Edinburgh and, in South Africa, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
“It is a festival rather than a show,” says festival director, Justine Drake, who was in Durban last week.
“It provides the perfect opportunity to showcase the talents of local chefs. Taste festivals are always held outdoors, like a garden party, and visitors have the opportunity of seeing demonstrations and chatting to the top chefs in the city. Durban will be a great festival because of your wonderful cosmopolitan flavours.”
Those already on board are Café 1999, Hartford House, 9th Avenue Bistro, Havana Grill, Little Havana, Jewel of India, Simply Asia, Versailles and Max’s Lifestyle Tavern and more are in the process of signing up for the inaugural show.
Besides watching chefs in action, visitors will be able to sip and sample wine and beer, as well as learn about whisky, brandy and food parings. They will also be able to learn how to make canapés and pancakes, sample Thai dishes and see what’s on offer at the Small Producers market.
A chef’s theatre will be the venue for cooking demonstrations, culinary challenges and entertaining tutorials.
