Artisan Gallery, 344 Florida Road, Durban

This gallery has a collection of contemporary art with a range of gifts, jewellery, textiles and other decorative items for Christmas by local artists. From functional, hand-painted ceramic items, to Gem Melville’s patterned, denim shoes and hand-sewn decorations by Helen Garas, each item is unique.

Open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5pm, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays from 9am to 1pm or by appointment.

Tinsel Toes

This hobby/business is run by sisters Liezl Gevers-Claassen and Giselle Gevers, who make earrings, tree decorations (hand moulded out of polymer clay), canvas paintings, decoupaged laser-cut coasters and hand-painted teacup pot plants, available at Glenwood market December 9 or through Facebook.

African Art Centre, 94 Florida Road, Morningside, Durban

A range of original, handmade ornaments and gifts. You’ll find beaded and embroidered items including jewellery, books, ceramics, candles and telephone wire products.

They have been made in workshops at the centre and purchases provide income and employment for more than 600 crafters supported by the centre.

Woza Moya, 26 Old Main Road Hillcrest and Windermere Centre

These are retail outlets of the Hillcrest Aids Centre and stock beautiful handmade items made by crafters in the valley of 1000 Hills.

At Windermere, there are 24 groups of crafters from areas in KZN represented. Shwe shwe, beadwork, embroidered items and more, all handmade and locally made.

Buzzart at the KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, Durban

This annual exhibition features many locally made gifts, ornaments and collectibles. A portion of the sales of ceramic rhinos, at R250, goes to the Wildlands Conservation Trust.

Hot pot plants

Ubunye Co-Operative Hot Pots will be on sale at The Priority Zone, Roof Top Garden, 77 Monty Naicker (Pine) Street on Saturday from 2.30pm to 4pm. They cost R50 and are the result of product development workshops, in conjunction with Umcebo Design. All funds will go to the Mzimela Tribal Authority crafters, near Eshowe.



Roseway Waldorf School in Alverstone will hold a natural and organic Christmas Market on Saturday, December 1 from 3-9pm. Food, crafts, “raw pizza”, organic fruit and veg will be on sale and there will be craft activities for children.

Three markets will be held: Sunday December 2, 9am-2pm;

Sunday December 16, 2-7pm - a Carols by Candlelight service starts at 7pm; and Sunday December 23 from 9am-2pm. There will be food, handmade crafts and family activities.

A craft sale will be held on December 1, from 9am-1pm, featuring mosaics, beadwork, sewing and pottery items, all handmade by members of this organisation that supports victims of stroke and brain injuries and their carers. A tea garden and entertainment will be provided.

Christmas markets will be held on December 9 and 23 from 9am-2pm. There will be gift ideas, decor items, arts and crafts on sale, as well as the usual food stalls and activities.

A colourful range of home-made Christmas crafts, decor and food will be on sale on Sunday December 16 from 9am-4pm.
