What is physiognomy?

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines it as: “The art of discovering temperament and character from outward appearance; the facial features help to show qualities of mind or character by their configuration or expression; external aspects; also inner character or quality revealed outwardly.”

In other words, it means that characteristics may be analysed by studying facial features.

Marthie Mare, who is one of the first practising physiognomists in South Africa, describes how it works and how to apply physiognomy and has compiled personality profiles of several celebrities. She includes that of Riaan Cruywagen, who is the longest-serving TV news reader in South Africa.

Among other things, she writes that Cruywagen has a dominant nose section, which means he is ambitious and will make a difference in his working environment. His nose is straight, but with an outward arch, which means he has a logical work style, but also has the talent to find solutions to problems at work. This goes well with his sloping forehead, indicating visual thinking.

This practical guide, with many photographs, provides tips on how to win over clients and strengthen relationships.
