South Africa's 140 fastest cars, jets and bikes will be out to break records at the third round of the Drag Nationals at Gosforth Park in Germiston on Monday (May 2) - and South Africa's newest jet-powered car will challenge an Impala jet aircraft down the quarter-mile drag strip.

"I'll give the Impala Jet a head start and still beat him,"

said a confident Johan Jacobs who plans to demoralise Impala pilot Dawid Laas when he takes him on - land jet vs air jet.

Whatever happens, spectators can expect earth-shattering, air-trembling, ear-deafening excitement.

Jacobs, who recently clocked a quicker time than the legendary Mick van Rensburg in his Jet 1, plans to break the SA jet speed record at the event.

The format of racing will be eliminations, with the drivers dialing in their times and the start lights set so that the drivers should go over the quarter mile finish line together.

The winners go through to the semi-finals and finals.

Other than the jet cars the quickest cars will race in the Top Eliminator Class. Nico van Rensburg in his 3750kW Top Fueller "Lethal Weapon" exhibition dragster is likely to get close to 400km/h - his current mark 6.293sec at a blistering 384.78km/h.

Racing starts at 10am on Monday - a public holiday - and will continue until 6pm when the Showdown Jet will do a night run and fire show.

- Admission is R40 for adults and R20 for children. - Sapa
