Hong Kong- The cable car ride to the Big Buddha statue in Hong Kong was suspended on Thursday after 700 tourists were trapped in cold conditions for up to 90 minutes by a breakdown.
The 5.6km cable car on Hong Kong’s Lantau Island stopped because of a technical fault on Wednesday as hundreds of Chinese New Year holidaymakers were on board.
Seven hundred people were trapped in gondolas for up to 90 minutes with air temperatures dipping to 3°C on Hong Kong’s coldest day of the year so far.
The cable car operator said on Thursday that the service would be closed for 10 days while an investigation and safety checks are conducted.
The cable car ride opened in 2006 and has been dogged by technical hitches. –
