Durban - A father and keen angler drowned, after slipping while fishing off Richards Bay’s south pier on Thursday.

It is believed the man, 59, fell into the water among rocks and dolosse.

Fellow anglers raised the alarm, said National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesman, Craig Lambinon.

The body of the man, known as Babs to other fishermen, had been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.

Police said the man was believed to have lost his footing and fell in a confined space and drowned.

He may have landed a fish and slipped when he bent down to unhook it.

A friend of the deceased, Kenneth Williams, said the family were in mourning and could not divulge further details.
