The driver of the truck in a crash on the N2 that claimed the lives of three people, including two children, has been granted bail of R1 000.
January Mabiyisi, 37, of Monyakeng in the Free State, was charged with three counts of culpable homicide. He appeared in Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The accident last week claimed the lives of Ballito residents, 11-year-old friends Ethan Prinsloo and Kelvin Killian, and his 43-year-old father Ockert Killian.
The three, who were returning from a family holiday to the Drakensberg, were killed instantly when an 18-wheel truck ploughed into their Ford Fiesta on the freeway’s northbound carriageway, near the Umgeni Road off-ramp.
The truck hit 16 cars before dragging Ockert’s car and one other car over an embankment. Six other people were injured in the crash. Mabiyisi was not hurt.
The case was postponed to September 28.
