Durban - A policewoman six months pregnant with the baby of the man she is accused of murdering, has been granted bail of R2 000.

Thembelihle Ngcobo, 31, of Pietermaritzburg, allegedly gunned down her colleague and the father of her unborn child, 29-year-old Constable Bongani Lembethe, outside his home in Signal Hill, Prestbury, last Monday night.

Lembethe was shot multiple times in the face and was discovered by his fiancée and mother of his two young daughters, Cindi Khanyile.

The State had initially indicated it would be opposing bail, for Khanyile’s safety. However, the prosecutor later withdrew State opposition as Ngcobo was set strict bail conditions.

Ngcobo, who will live outside Pietermaritzburg while she is on bail, has been ordered not to contact or interfere with Khanyile or any other member of Lembethe’s family.

Pietermaritzburg Magistrate Ashin Singh ordered that Ngcobo surrender her firearm to authorities.

Ngcobo’s attorney, Phumelani Fakude, told media after her bail hearing that Ngcobo had not “set out to kill anyone”.

The case has been adjourned to later this month.
