The mangled remains of a bakkie that was involved in a crash on Pietermaritzburgs New Greytown Road, which has claimed one life and left five others injured.
Traffic in Pietermaritzburg’s northern suburbs was backlogged for hours following a horror crash on New Greytown Road near Allandale Drive on Monday afternoon that left one person dead, one fighting for his life and four others with serious injuries.
According to paramedics, a truck, a bakkie and a car, were involved in the collision.
ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said they found the driver trapped in the mangled wreck of the bakkie at the scene of the accident.
“The driver had suffered serious traumatic injuries and he was declared dead on the scene.
The fire department had to use the Jaws of Life to remove his body from the wreckage,” Banks said.
Three passengers from the bakkie were found lying on the roadside. They were treated for suspected neck and back injuries as well as possible chest injuries and internal injuries.
The driver of the car, a man in his 50s, is fighting for his life at Grey’s Hospital. He is reported to be in a critical condition.
The truck driver suffered minor injuries.
