General Riah Phiyega will have to deal with various tough issues in the SAPS:

l Abuse of the slush funds in crime intelligence that has led to the suspension of several officers in senior management.

l Officers on patrol demanding bribes from motorists.

l Police officers accepting bribes to ensure that dockets disappear.

l Police brutality.

l Police protecting each other when there is a case against them, or other officers making sure the file disappears.

l Police raping people and other officers keeping quiet.

l The use of SAPS firearms and uniforms in robberies.

l Police neglecting their duties and being casual about tragedies, including murder and rape.

l The bungling of cases.
