The eviction of more than 1 000 illegal settlers on privately owned industrial land at Shortts Retreat was halted on Monday pending the finalisation of expropriation proceedings.
Msunduzi Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi confirmed in papers before the Pietermaritzburg High Court that the Msunduzi executive committee had resolved to expropriate the property at Shortts Retreat for the development of a residential township.
Nkosi said the MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works had approved the municipality’s application.
“The expropriation process has now been put into motion. The application is now transferred to the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs for the approval of the MEC.”
The case was adjourned to November.
