Former ambassador to Iran Yusuf Saloojee has been suspended from the Department of International Relations and Co-operation.
Department spokesman Clayson Monyela said this was pending an investigation into allegations that Saloojee accepted payments from MTN.
Monyela said that Saloojee was “an employee of the department”.
He declined to give details of his position.
In a written reply to parliamentary questions from the DA, Minister of International Relations Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said her department was probing allegations that “a certain ambassador received payment from a certain company”.
The Hawks have said an investigation is under way into allegations relating to MTN’s securing of an operating licence in Iran. The allegations were made by Turkish mobile operator Turkcell, which tendered for a mobile operating licence in Iran. – Sapa
