Sanjeev Sewnarain, Client Liaison Officer at the South African Weather Service in KwaZulu-Natal, said November had been cooler than expected.
“We have been experiencing below normal maximum temperatures… so [it has been] slightly cooler compared with previous years.”
Sewnarain said that Durban had had 24 days of rain since the beginning of November.
If the figures from January to November were compared for the past 13 years, then this year’s rainfall was the highest since 2000.
He said that 383.8mm of rain had fallen since October.
From figures supplied by him, the city has had 600mm of rain from September to November. Compared with the averages for the past 13 years, September had three times the Average amount of rain, and October double.
Most of the summer rain in Durban falls between November and April, but that seems to have been reversed over the past year. In those months in 2011/12, barring March, the rainfall each month was between a half to a third of the 13-year-average.
