Durban - Contract workers at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital have abandoned their posts, protesting against “low wages, unfair working conditions” and outsourcing.

Security, cleaning and catering staff picketed at the gate of the uMlazi hospital at not getting a response to a memorandum of grievances they claimed to have handed over to hospital chief executive, Dr Sandile Tshabalala.

“We stopped work briefly (on Monday) to hand over the memorandum and because we care about the patients, we returned to work. We wanted a response by 5pm, he promised us by 3pm ... but nothing came,” said one worker.
