Durban - The traditional bean race at Greyvile race track, where each potted beans represents a runner in the big Vodacom Durban July race on Saturday, is well on track.

And although it looks neck and neck at the moment, the leafy bean representing Rabada is the current leader of the pack, closely followed by Saratoga Dancer, then St Tropez and Abashiri.

But as the sun continues to beat down on the bean bench outside one of the Gold Circle offices during the day, and as the beans continue to shoot up, the running order could well change come the end of the week.

Meanwhile, the race course was a hive of activity on Monday as fencing, flowers, toilets and signage continued going in.

About 50 000 people are expected at the society event of the year, including racing journalists from around the world.
