DURBAN - Sibonelo Mthembu, who works at the Diakonia Council of Churches, tries to lift the massive cross that will be carried by four people from the Durban Exhibition Centre (DEC) to the city hall Friday morning during the annual ecumenical Good Friday procession. A new cross is made every year and this year it has been made from sticks bound together. About 3000 people are expected to gather to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and his death on Calvary. Meditative singing will start at 5.15am at the DEC, with the first part of the service taking place at 6am. The congregation will then walk through the streets of Durban to the city hall in silence. The service will end with the flowering of the cross at about 8.15am. The dawn service is organised by Diakonia, which has just celebrated 40 years of working towards a just society.Daily News
