DURBAN - Motorists and business owners are breathing a sigh of relief after the reopening of Silverglen Drive in Chatsworth.

The road is one of the main arterial routes linking the Silverglen suburb with Havenside and the Higginson Highway.

A portion of the road near Bulbul Drive was washed away by floods during a heavy downpour in August last year. For eight months motorists and delivery trucks had to use alternative routes out of the bustling Silverglen area, affecting residents and businesses.

Thaniga Moodley, owner of Victory Motors petrol station, had to close the operation while the road was repaired.

“Now is the time to catch up as we had to put our lives on hold,” Moodley said.

Tozi Mthethwa, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, said construction work was still in progress on Bulbul Drive. She urged motorists to be courteous and to adhere to road signs and the stop-and-go procedures until construction was completed on the Bulbul Drive culvert.

Ward councillor Tony Govender said the road was scheduled to reopen last month, but the project had been beset by delays because of the weather and construction problems. Several other roads near Silverglen Drive had also been damaged and have been repaired.
