DURBAN – An alleged house robber was shot dead and his accomplice wounded by a Durban home owner.

The incident occurred early Monday when two men allegedly tried to rob a house in Winston Park, Hillcrest.

According to local neighbourhood security officers, the owner of the house heard his dogs bark frantically and when he went to investigate and found two men inside the house.

It is alleged both men were armed with knives and tried to stab him. The owner allegedly shot them. Police found a spear next to one of the suspects. The injured robber was treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken to hospital.

The incident comes in the wake of a series of break-ins and house robberies in Durban's UpperHighway in recent months.

The local Winston Park Guardians neighbourhood spokesman Hayden Johnson said the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting was being pieced together by police.
