Disgruntled Sydenham residents held a placard demonstration along Moses Kotane (Sparks) Road calling for speed calming measures to be implemented  similar to those on Florida Road.

The demonstration was held after the death of a seven-year-old school boy was killed while crossing the road on Thursday afternoon.

On Friday morning they staged a protest during peak traffic. They blocked off one lane on either side of the road between Barns and Saunders Road to highlight their plight.

This, after Sydenham community representative Craig Esbend started an online petition, calling on resident to take action.

"It seems as if the eThekwini Traffic Authority would rather see more deaths on and along Sparks Road, as this isn't important to them. Further more Durban Metro and our local police seem to sit back and just watch this unfold..Most residents along Sparks Road can honestly tell you they have never seen Durban Metro Police do speed trapping along this road," Esbend said.

He pointed to authorities recently installing traffic calming measures along Florida saying Sparks Road was just as busy.
