DURBAN – Dozens of people had to be evacuated from a high-rise building in the Durban city centre on Wednesday after a fire broke out on the third floor.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the City Life building on Anton Lembede Street (Smith) where they discovered a thick column of smoke coming from one of the offices.

According to paramedics from Rescue Care, a total of 18 people were treated for smoke inhalation and had to be taken to hospital.

Authorities closed off Anton Lembede Street at the intersections of Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street (Grey) and Joseph Nduli Street (Russell).

The cause of the fire had not yet been determined.
