Johannesburg - More charges of high treason have been laid against EFF leader Julius Malema by another political party, the National Peoples Ambassadors (NPA).

The charges, which were laid at Hillbrow police station on Friday, are related to what the fairly new party regards as actions that are disrespectful to the constitution.

Hillbrow police spokesman Mduduzi Zondo confirmed that charges had been laid but added that Malema would not be arrested immediately.

“The case will need to be investigated. Once investigations have been completed, the matter will be taken to court for a decision,” Zondo said.

NPA general secretary Andile Hlatshwayo said the EFF had displayed behaviour that was not in line with the values of ubuntu.

“We took a decision after last Tuesday when they became violent and threw fire extinguishers. There is no longer order in Parliament and we need to deal with that,” he said.

The party also found Malema’s language in the House to be undesirable.

“We don’t want future leaders who yell voetsek to elders in Parliament. What kind of leader is that?”

Hlatshwayo said that if the police failed to take action against the EFF leader, it would prove that the justice system agreed with his sentiment that the security services were all EFF members. Malema had made the comment at Orlando Stadium in Soweto last month while addressing supporters.

“(Eugene) Terre’Blanche (former Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging leader) was arrested for storming Parliament on his horses. Therefore, the same must happen to Malema for throwing fire extinguishers. If that does not happen, it will be clear that we are living in a new kind of apartheid that is being perpetuated by black people,” Hlatshwayo said.

The NPA was formed in June last year and is based in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal. It will be contesting this year’s local government elections.

EFF spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi dismissed the charge.

“It’s a frivolous charge from a frivolous party.”
