Durban - The bodies of two men who had been assaulted and stabbed, have been discovered at the KwaMashu hostel.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the bodies of the men, in their 20s, were found on Thursday.

Just a week earlier, KZN provincial police commission-er Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni addressed a platoon of national intervention unit (NIU) police deployed to assist with policing in the politically volatile area.

KZN MEC for Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu said the increasing incidence of murder was worrisome and had turned the hostel into “a murder city”.

“It is alleged the two victims were suspects in a rape case and were out on bail,” said Mchunu.

“Preliminary information reveals that community members spotted them and allegedly beat them to death.”

Mchunu condemned the attack, calling on hostel dwellers not to take the law into their own hands.

Instead, he appealed to the community to work with the police and safety structures to eliminate crime in the area.

“Recently the Department of Community Safety and Liaison met the hostel block chairperson with a view of understanding internal dynamics that cause so much crime in this hostel,” the MEC said.

“We resolved with them that they will also play an active role in ensuring that we, together with them, develop concrete measures to arrest the scourge of crime. I urge the community of this hostel to work with the police.”
