Durban - A suspect – who had been wanted for murder, attempted murder and house robberies in Creighton – was killed in a shoot-out with police on Thursday while two of his accomplices were arrested.
Provincial police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said the suspect was killed when he and another were cornered by police.
They had been wanted for Tuesday’s killing of a 26-year-old man.
Naicker said that at about 9pm on Tuesday, Siyabonga Shezi, 26, had been in his Isuzu bakkie with his girlfriend at Creighton when they were attacked and shot, allegedly by the suspects.
“The woman managed to escape unharmed. Creighton police were only informed of the attack the following morning by the woman. When they arrived they found Shezi dead with gunshot wounds to his body,” he said.
Naicker said a case of murder and attempted murder was opened.
“Police went to the suspects’ house and waited for them to return. In the early hours of yesterday morning two of the suspects returned and when they noticed that the police were in the house they opened fire. Police returned fire killing one of the suspects.
“The second suspect was not injured and was arrested.
“Stolen goods such as credit cards, clothing, cash and liquor as well as eight cellphones were recovered. In a follow-up operation another suspect who is also linked to house robberies in the area was arrested,” he said.
They will appear in the Ixopo Magistrate’s Court on Monday. A 9mm pistol that was stolen in a housebreaking case in uMzimkhulu was recovered. - Daily News
