Cape Town - The Hawks have told Public Protector Thuli Madonsela not to panic amid her fears that she could be arrested by the unit.

This follows questions sent to her by the Hawks early in the year.

But following Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s threat of arrest by the Hawks, Madonsela expressed her fears of being arrested by the crime unit.

Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said on Monday that there
was no need for Madonsela to fear being arrested by the unit.

He said the unit was not investigating her and that the questions were sent a long time ago.

“We said there was no investigation… There was no basis for the investigation and the docket was closed,” he said.

Madonsela said she had every reason to worry about being arrested because of the existing climate.

Mulaudzi insisted there was no need for her to be concerned about being arrested

As far as the Hawks were concerned, this was a closed matter.

Madonsela was previously attacked by the ANC in Parliament over her functions.

This was before the Constitutional Court gave the Nkandla judgment to clarify that her findings were in fact binding.
