Johannesburg - Gauteng could come to a standstill next Thursday if the leaders of #OutsourcingMustFall get their way.

Themba Ncalo, a representative of the movement, confirmed to the Daily News’s sister paper, the Pretoria News, on Tuesday that the date for the shutdown was September 8.

“We have taken a decision with the shop stewards and the workers’ associations that the shutdown will happen next week,” Ncalo said.

Last week, during a media briefing to update the media on recent developments, the movement announced it had initially wanted the shutdown to take place on Monday, but had to postpone it to allow students to finish their SRC elections.

“The metro police said there is another march happening on September 3, so we agreed on September 8,” Ncalo said.

They had delivered memorandums to the Department of Higher Education and Training, the University of Pretoria and the Tshwane University of Technology, but by Tuesday had not received any response.

“This is going to be a huge thing. No one will be working on that day,” Ncalo said.

He said students and workers in tertiary institutions in the province as well as workers from various retailers would also join the march.

Ncalo said they would also approach the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) to comply and not allow people to go to work.

“We are planning on engaging with Santaco to comply with us, but even if they don’t comply, the march will continue.”

The march would serve to address the workers and students' dissatisfaction about the way insourcing was implemented.
