DURBAN - Four people died when the car they were travelling in caught alight after a collision in Newcastle, while a truck driver died after his truck overturned in Cato Manor on Tuesday morning.
Emergency services closed off Vuzi Mzimela (Bellair) Road to traffic in both directions after a truck carrying a tank with flammable liquid overturned as it took a sharp bend near the container depot. Police at the scene said the driver died. The liquid spilled onto the side of the road.
A clean-up operation was under way.
Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said a Ford Ranger and a BMW collided head-on in the Newcastle Industrial area. All four occupants in the
BMW were trapped inside when the car caught alight. The identities of the deceased have not been revealed yet. The driver of the Ranger was taken to hospital with serious injuries. A case of culpable homicide will be opened at Newcastle police station.
