Durban could get its own cat cafe, where feline fans can pop in, have a cuppa and spend time playing with cats.
It is an idea that has swept many countries and Niki Moore, the founder of Cats of Durban, says the concept is so popular in London there is a three-month waiting list to book a place.
“People spend £5 (R85) an hour to play with the cats,” said Moore, whose volunteers help the city’s feral and stray cats by raising funds to pay vets to do sterilisations.
“I put the idea on our Facebook page and 500 people quickly liked the suggestion. Everyone I have spoken to is fascinated by the idea,” she said on Tuesday.
Moore has identified two possible sites for the cat cafe; currently a derelict building in Glenwood and the other, an abandoned old prison in the Point area, and she is now planning to approach the city with the idea.
In the meantime, she continues to sell her popular Cats of Durban T-shirts to raise funds.
The various shirts feature a Zulu cat, a beach cat, a diver cat, a surfer cat or a sari cat.
Moore sells the T-shirts and bags at the popular iHeart Market at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
