Rio de Janeiro - Rio de Janeiro's iconic landscape is now an official world heritage site.
The UN's Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation gave Rio the title on Sunday in recognition of the unique way its exuberant natural setting blends with the urban landscape.
Among the sites recognised by name were Copacabana beach, the Sugar Loaf mountain, and the Christ the Redeemer monument atop Corcovado mountain. Also mentioned was the Tijuca National Park, which is one of the largest forests in the world within an urban area.
Some of the areas have been degraded by pollution, such as Botafogo Bay. Brazilian official say the designation will help improve the condition of these areas. - Sapa-AP
