Cape Town - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has been admitted to a Cape Town hospital.

A statement released by the family on Wednesday said Tutu admitted himself for treatment after facing a recurring infection.

“The Archbishop underwent similar treatment last year. He is expected to remain in hospital for a week or two,” said Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe, daughter of the Archbishop and his wife, Leah Tutu.

It is unclear what infection Tutu, 84, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is suffering from but his family has said it is not related to the prostate cancer he has been living with for almost 20 years.

His admission to hospital a year ago raised concerns when the Archbishop was not able to complete his morning service; nor was he well enough to attend an event where he was meant to hand out gifts at the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital.

Tutu retired from public life in 2010, but has kept speaking out on issues ranging from Israel’s policies towards the Palestinians to corruption among South Africa’s political elite.

A month ago, the Archbishop celebrated his 40 years of service as a bishop at a mass at St Mary’s Cathedral in central Johannesburg, where he was dean when he was appointed as a bishopof Lesotho.
