Durban - A family is in shock after a R194 000 wedding fund went missing from a safe in the master bedroom of their home.

A member of the extended family is suspected to be behind the theft.

The money had been saved to pay for their daughter’s wedding, expected to take place next month.

Speaking to the Daily News’s sister newspaper, iSolezwe, Jabu Mkhize said the money had gone missing after she had left their Hammarsdale home last Friday to fetch her daughter-in-law from the airport.

“When I left, my helper was around.

“When I returned and entered my bedroom, I found the hat of one of my grandchildren on my bed and I wondered how it got there because I had locked the bedroom,” said Mkhize.

She said she then realised her bedroom window had been broken. “I rushed to the safe, but the money was missing,” she said.

Mkhize said she immediately went to a house, which a certain member of the extended family frequently visited, but the person was not there.

A witness said she had seen the family member leaving with others.

“This money was going to pay for a lot, we were also going to use it to buy our daughter a wedding gift and to fund other expenses,” said Mkhize.

She said the wedding would go ahead as planned next month.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane, confirmed police were investigating a case of theft.
