The only thing awkward about this film is having to watch an unconvincing Zac Efron for 94 minutes.
That Awkward Moment centres on three best friends living in New York City and their various relationships. The premise of the film is, what happens in a relationship when you have to ask the question: so, where is this going?
Sadly, this basic premise is dragged out in a forced, unfunny manner for what should really be confined to sitcom length.
A bromance is solidified as the friends, played by Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B Jordan, make a pact to stay single, while instead pursuing serious relationships on the side. This involves typically going to bars, hitting on women and getting drunk all the time.
Jason (Efron) pursues an attractive woman he meets at a bar and mistakes for a prostitute, yet strangely she continues to give her heart to him in a completely unbelievable fashion, while Mikey (Jordan) struggles with feelings for his soon-to-be-ex-wife and Daniel (Teller) falls for his best friend. Amid their fear of commitment, they pursue these women in secret. Inevitably, the secrets of each relationship unravel.
Unlike films such as American Pie, the rest of the film is fleshed out with the guys getting themselves into awkward sexual situations that fail to be either surprising or amusing.
Within the first 40 minutes of the movie, the entire plot becomes completely predictable. The chemistry between the guys feels very forced toward bro-humour which is often crass, but not fresh, mostly because of the contrived script.
The film presents itself as a rom-com seen from a male perspective, yet none of the characters or the storyline is fully believable and it doesn’t even hit the mark as an average date movie.
If you liked Knocked Up and American Pie then you will probably like this.
