The Greatest Love Of All: The Whitney Houston Show returns to Cape Town at Artscape June 21 with Belinda Davids in the role of Houston.Pictures: Jason Boud

Rating: 4.5/5

Whitney Houston was one of the best vocalists of our time and thanks to Showtime Australia and spectacular vocals of Belinda Davids for a moment in time you experience the greatness that is Whitney.

Tribute shows can either be a roaring success such as the Michael Jackson show or it can be a snooze fest with a mediocre band and below average vocal ability. The Greatest Love of All is luckily in the former and will blow you away. This is mostly due to the amazing vocal ability of Belinda Davids. She not only embodies Whitney physically but her vocal styling and riffs are so accurate that there are times when it feels like you’re listening to the iconic songstress herself.

Whitney Houston songs are very difficult to sing because they are arranged very high and a bunch of her songs have several key changes. Belinda is able to sing with ease and it’s as if she was born to do this. The real shining moment is during I Have Nothing.

This is probably one of Whitney’s most difficult songs and Belinda not only hit it out of the park, she hit it straight of the stadium. I was gagging the whole way through and when that final chorus hit, the whole crowd gave a standing ovation.

The only negatives are that the first half wardrobe was questionable and the back-up dancers at times are distracting with them doing very remedial choreography. Luckily, Belinda has a voice that makes you forget about all that and has the type of vocal ability that puts Mariah Carey to shame. She really is a star and her voice will have you in tears.

The Greatest Love of All is a wonderful tribute to the icon that left us too soon. Belinda not only pays tribute to Whitney but she gives you two hours of what a Whitney concert would be like. This show is not to be missed and is something that every Whitney fan should experience.

Tickets are available at Computicket and the show is running from 22 June 2017 – 16 July 2017 at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town.
