Slaughterhouse

Welcome to: Our House

***

Not the Marshall Mathers LP.

The idea of supergroups was revived when Joell Ortiz, Royce da 5’9, Joe Budden and Crooked I got together to form Slaughterhouse. Signed to Eminem’s (aka Marshall Mathers) Shady Records, the group’s second album is mostly produced, mixed by and features Eminem three times. None of these rappers really bring their usual A+ game to the table though.

Some parts are emo-rap, others humourous, but most annoyingly, they detour to super-misogynist rhyming. “I’ll throw this dick on you girl” is part of a chorus, wait for it, that’s rap-sung by Eminem. The usually grimey rappers caught flak for their celebratory My Life featuring Cee-Lo and the skhothane-esque Throw It Away featuring Swizz Beatz, but they show glimpses of their glory in the likes of poignant Goodbye, Our Way and Die. It seems to have become the norm for rappers’ mixtapes to sometimes be better than their albums.

The On The House mixtape is a better representation of Slaughterhouse than Welcome to: Our House so it would be super if the group just asked Eminem to just sign the cheques and make the beats next album round. – Helen Herimbi
