GIG OF THE WEEK:

King Britt

Capital Music Cafe, Rosebank (Tomorrow)

With the world’s entertainment industry seemingly descending upon us, we couldn’t be happier to hear that King Britt will be visiting soon. The US DJ has been invited here by Kid Fonque to perform at #2sidesofthebeat, a monthly event that sees dubstep and house merge with genres like hip hop, broken beat and anything else you can think of.

Sadly for other cities, Britt will only play in Joburg for his first gig in the country.

The man who has been making infectious music for more than|20 years wears many hats from producing, DJing to composing.

He is considered one of the most prolific artists in electronic music. From his humble begin-|nings as a record buyer for the singles/import section for Tower Records, Britt became a big name when he started DJing and opening for acts such as Sade.

The Grammy award winner soon became well known for his incredible mixes of songs by a host of arstists including Miles Davis, Curtis Mayfield, Radiohead, Alison Moyet, Everything But the Girl, Chic, Macy Gray and Roy Ayers.

His diverse catalogue shows his deep understanding of many musical forms. You may not know his work as King Britt as he has produced music under numerous aliases, from his house/techno work as Fhloston Paradigm and Scuba to his hip hop, jazz-inspired Saturn Never Sleeps project.

In Rosebank the man will play alongside multi-instrumentalist Tendai “Baba” Maraire (of the Seattle-based hip hop outfit Shabazz Palaces).

Maraire brings his father Dumi’s historic Zimbabwe recordings of the mbira and combines them with contemporary arrangements. The two are working on an album that is set |to be release release next year.

They will perform a five-hour set and will be supported by Kid Fonque. The doors will open at 9pm. Tickets will cost R100. Capital Music Café (lower section), corner Keyes and Tyrwhitt avenues, Rosebank. – Munyaradzi Vomo
