GIG OF THE WEEK:

It is now common knowledge that around this time of the year Joyous Celebration go all out to record another CD for our enjoyment.

The humungous choir, which has been recording annually since 1994, never runs out of new material. Theirs is a winning formula in that the group always recruits new voices and fresh minds to write new tracks. They have also done a lot of work on adapting their sound as music evolves.

To spread their reach further across the African continent, the choir has of late taken a liking to using singers from countries outside of South Africa. For example, My God Is Good was done by the Nigerian singer Uche and is an anthem in Nigeria. Zimbabwe’s Mkhululi did a great job on Ichokwadi, which is the closing song whenever the choir crosses the border to perform.

“While staying true to our contemporary style, we are leaning towards the homely African- inspired songs in our selection

for the forthcoming Joyous 17 recording,” said co-founder of the group, Jabu Hlongwane.

“It will be the kind of heart-warming sounds that have the crowds on their feet worshipping and filled with joy,” he explained.

As usual, the guys behind this singing machine always feature guests, but have kept mum about who would make the guest line-up.

In a separate interview, this reporter gathered that Idols SA winner, Khaya Mthethwa, would definitely be showing us why he is the country’s best.

The Joyous Celebration 17 live CD and DVD recording takes place at Rhema Ministries in Randburg tomorrow. Tickets: from R150 at Computicket. The show starts at 7.30pm. – Munyaradzi Vomo
