The Motswakoriginator Deluxe Edition

***

Motswako 101.

Believe it or not, in 2012, there are people who still don’t know what Motswako is or how it started. The self-anointed Mostwakoriginator (motswako + originator), Khuli Chana, took it upon himself to school those people and just those who need a reminder.

As a cherry on top of the deluxe edition of his debut album, The Motswakoriginator, Khuli Chana, who is a third of groundbreaking trio Morafe, put a DVD together. Here, he invites the stalwarts of the Motswako sub-genre to share their thoughts, not only about Motswako, but about Khuli’s role in it too. So, naturally, some parts of this DVD are self-indulgent.

The quality of some of the behind-the-scenes shoots and performance footage is somewhat shoddy and gives the idea that it was shot on a camera phone with no intention of being sold to the public. But the candid commentary and the warts-and-all nature in which Khuli Chana tells his rags-to-riches story are admirable.

Here, the history of Motswako intertwines with Khuli Chana’s history and chronicles how he became its poster boy, which makes for interesting viewing. – Helen Herimbi
